Yakubu DogaraFormer presiding officers of the House of Representatives in Nigeria have congratulated the new Speaker of the House, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, saying his emergence was a continuation of a tradition of revolutions by the parliament against a culture of imposition.

The group of former lawmakers, including Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and Honourable Ghali Na’Abba, on Wednesday, commended the members of the 8th House of Representatives for upholding the tradition of independence which the legislature world over was known for.

They further advised the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress to work with the new leadership of the House of Representatives.

Honourable Yakubu Dogara thanked the group and promised that the 8th House of Representatives would not let them down.

The new Speaker, who was not the choice candidate of the party’s leadership, was elected on Tuesday, defeating Honourable Femi Gabajabiamila, who had been chosen as the party’s candidate in a straw poll held over the weekend.

After his emergence as the Speaker, the ruling party expressed displeasure with the outcome of the election, calling it Treachery.

The congratulatory message by the former Speakers shows their acceptance of electoral process that placed Honourable Dogara, who is also a member of the APC, in the leadership position.
