One of Burundi’s Vice President, Gervais Rufyikiri, has fled the country, saying he felt threatened after opposing President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third-term bid, an allegation which has been denied by Burundi’s government.
Burundi has seen series of violent protests in the capital, Bujumbura, following the April 25 announcement that Mr Nkurunziza would be running for office again.
Opponents said the President’s move is unconstitutional
Mr Rufyikiri told a foreign television from Belgium that “I took the decision to leave the country because I was personally threatened.
“All who are against the third term are threatened. I personally was fearing for my security since I saw some signals”.
However, a Presidential Spokesman said there had been no threat to Rufyikiri.
