Bukola Saraki Senate President NigeriaThe leadership of Nigeria’s Senate is seeking the co-operation of the French government to tackle the security problems in the north-eastern part of Nigeria.

Senate President Bukola Saraki made the appeal when the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Jacques Labriolle, paid him a visit at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Senator Saraki also assured the French Ambassador that the crises rocking the National Assembly over the election of principal officers in both chambers would be resolved soon to enable the legislature work closely with the executive.

“The sacrifices that Nigerians have made in the last election also means that we must make sure that we don’t lose this opportunity.

“On our part we are committed. You must have observed some of the events of the last few days. Sometimes when you go through elections these sought of things do tend to happen.

“But gradually, as you can see, we are settling down,” the Senate President said.

He said that the crisis would not affect the collaboration between the National Assembly and the Executive, promising that issues that would come before the National Assembly would be treated with dispatch and the alacrity required.

“We are a responsible arm of government and we will do whatever it is in the interest of the government,” he said.

The Senate President stressed that one of the priority areas in governance in Nigeria was the issue of insecurity in the north-east.

“We are all pleased to see some of the achievements in the last few months. It is now for us to finish the job.

“We have been able to push them back but we need to be able to dismantle the structure itself, rebuild the areas and begin to provide economic and social development in those areas,” Senator Saraki told the French delegation.
