The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, says there is no truth in media reports that he is planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a meeting with State Chairmen of the APC at the National Assembly on Saturday, Mr Dogara gave them the assurance that he would remain a member of the party.

The leadership tussle in the House of Representatives had triggered internal wrangling within the party, pitching the Speaker and some lawmakers of the APC against the leadership of the party.

An APC caucus in the House had rejected a list of principal officers chosen by the party’s leadership, insisting that they should be allowed to make the choice.

The development triggered rumours that the Speaker could defect from the APC. The Speaker told the gathering that it was not true.

The Acting Chairman of the State Chairmen Forum, Umar Dogowa, appealed to the Speaker to uphold the supremacy of the party and carry everyone in the House along in his tenure.

Mr Dogowa further spoke on the need to ensure a united House of Representatives and consequently a peaceful 8th Assembly.

The Speaker agreed with the need for party supremacy and further gave his commitment to the party.

Mr Dogara also touched on the leadership crisis in the House, assuring the State Chairmen that it would be resolved.

The Speaker stressed that Nigerians expected a lot from the APC and that even though it is expected that some friction may occur within the party, it must not stop the party from moving forward.

After a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari, the leadership of the party and some lawmakers, the APC leadership said it had resolved the controversy in the Senate and House of Representatives over choice of principal officers.
