world-cupUnited States Captain, Carli Lloyd, inspired the team to Women’s World Cup triumph with a crushing 5-2 victory over Japan and a record breaking hat-trick, including a spectacular long-range goal.

The American captain struck three times inside 16 minutes as the US stormed into an unexpected and insurmountable 4-nil lead over their shell-shocked opponents.

The game, played in front of 53,341 spectators at a packed BC Place, was the highest-scoring Women’s World Cup final ever, and an entertaining finale to what has been an excellent tournament.

US women’s team Head Coach, Jill Ellis and players reflected on their World Cup victory against the defending champions, Japan.

Ellis said that she had to pinch herself to make sure she was not dreaming after the team stunned Japan 5 goals to 2.

Lloyd, who did the magic, labelled the win as a historic performance that handed the US ladies their third World Cup and first since 1999.
