On Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari held a closed-door meeting with the All Progressives Congress’ lawmakers in Nigeria’s House of Representatives but ended without a concrete resolution of the controversy surrounding the choice of principal officers in the House.

The meeting scheduled ahead of  Tuesday’s resumption of the Senate and the House from recess, ended sooner than expected.

Earlier, the All Progressives Congress (APC) had accepted the leadership of the National Assembly, although peace talks were still in progress to resolve the crisis.

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has said at the end of an earlier held reconciliation meeting, that discussions were still ongoing to finally resolve the National Assembly leadership crisis.

Although Governor Okorocha said at the time that progress had been made, he did not give details of their discussion. He said that the factions in the National Assembly had agreed to work together to reach amicable solutions.

The opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had also called on the international community to intervene in the crisis affecting the APC.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said that they wanted the international community to call President Muhammadu Buhari to order by asking him to respect democratic institutions.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh, also accused the President of using the Nigerian Police to intimidate and harass the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremamdu, who is a member of the party.

The members of the House now resume proceedings with hopes that they would be able to deal with the issues surrounding the choice of principal officers which had brought a rift between members of the APC in the House.
