The Nigerian Army has claimed responsibility for the sporadic firing experienced on Tuesday in Damaturu, the Yobe State’s capital.
According to some residents, there were rapid firings with all sorts of military hardware in the Yobe State’s capital, north-east Nigeria, at about 7:30 pm and lasted for an hour.
In a swift reaction to the sporadic firing, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, claimed that the Nigeria Army was responsible for the frequent firing witnessed by residents across town.
“Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public that the sporadic firing heard in Damaturu this evening was a gross act of indiscipline on the part of a soldier who has already been apprehended.
“The public, especially those residing in Damaturu are please, requested to remain calm and go about their normal business,” Usman said in a statement.
The incident had brought fear in the minds of residents who were struggling over the years to cope with frequent attacks on the town by the Boko Haram militants.
The insurgents had recently launched several assaults on the Yobe State’s capital, which include the attack on a Police Checkpoint and an attack on the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway.
The last time Damaturu came under a serious attack was on the 9th of September 2014 which was preceded by the September 1st 2014 attack which claimed several lives.
In the September 1st attack the militants came in full force with the intention of taking control of the trouble town.
