HID-AWOLOWOThe matriarch of the Awolowo family, Mama Hannah Dideolu Awolowo has been laid to rest in the home town of the Awolowos in Ogun State.

In what could be described as the biggest gathering of high profile dignitaries this year, Ikenne in Ogun State, the hometown of the Awolowos, hosted family members, friends and political associates for the interment of the matriarch.

The activities started with a church service, at the Anglican Church Ikenne, presided over by the Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh.

At the church service to pay their last respect to the late Mrs Awolowo were former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Ernest Sonekan, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and members of the Executive Council among others.

It was a funeral service of class, as farewell hymns and thanksgiving songs rent the air.

Delivering a sermon that centred on the need to lead a life of service, Most Reverend Okoh said Mrs Awolowo’s character while alive made the late husband described her as a “jewel of inestimable value”.

H.I.D. Awolowo was buried on a day she would have turned one hundred years old.
