IDPs-UN-YobeThe Yobe State government has appealed to the Federal Government to hasten efforts and ensure that  Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) spread across major towns and villages of the state are able to return home.

The Chairman of the Rehabilitation and Relocation Committee of the IDPs in the state, who is also the state Deputy Governor, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, made the request while addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Damaturu.

Mr Aliyu had a chat with reporters after visiting the displaced persons at the Kukareta and Kasaisa camps in the suburb of Damaturu, the capital of the state.

He was at the camp to address the IDPs who have been agitating and threatening to return to their various homes sequel to the relative peace currently being experienced in the volatile northeast.

Asked on the safety of the IDPs with the pockets of attacks that have been carried out in some parts of the state, the Deputy Governor said though the military had acknowledged the safety of some areas, the civil authority needed to return to these safe areas to help the military in fishing out the bad eggs should they resurface.

He said: “Let me appeal to the Federal Government to hastened the return of these people as being on ground here has given us added advantage. Lots of these places are safe.

“The strength of the insurgents have been drastically reduced and the people are eager to return as we keep appealing to them to be patient but we will only return them if the military agreed to the safety of these areas”.

The committee chairman, who assured the IDPs that the state government would continue to assist in meeting their needs, also revealed that their need assessments had been carried out with the hope of making it available for the Federal Government’s reconstruction team.

Mr Aliyu, who called for reconstruction of the war devastated areas, also commended the Minister of Environment and the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operation that were in the state recently to undertake thorough work on their various assignments, despite the fear of the Boko Haram insurgency. He urged others to emulate them.

The Deputy Governor said others that visited the state recently did their jobs in a hurry, as they were in a eager to return to the nation’s capital.

While at the camp, the Deputy Governor commissioned a borehole at the Kukareta camp, with the aim of providing potable water for the inhabitants.

He also inspected 30 tents dormitory recently constructed by the Rehabilitation and Relocation Committee in the state to address the accommodation problems faced by the displaced persons at the camp.
