Bakassi, Cross River

Bakassi, Cross RiverThe Cross River State Government is calling on the Federal Government as well as the International Community not to relent in its efforts towards rehabilitating the displaced Bakassi people.

The Director-General of the Cross River State Health Care Development Agency (CRSPHCDA), Dr Betta Edu, said that attention urgently needs to be given to the camp of the displaced people in order to give them adequate health attention to enable them live normal lives.

Dr Betta Edu was speaking while at the camp located at Saint Marks Primary and Secondary School in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state, where she led a team of health workers to render free health services.

It is over three years since the displaced Bakassi indigenes have been clustered in the camp following their eviction from their ancestral home.

Children, youths and the aged have had to endure series of harsh conditions in the camp environment which lacks basic amenities.

Dr Edu said that the decision to help was further informed by the discovery that 90% of the children in the camp were malnourished.

She added that their health conditions at a time when different diseases keep emanating called for the visit which was also to solicit help from the public.

Asides the free medical care given, the displaced persons were also given some relief materials.

Camp Leader of the displaced, while thanking the health workers, said that the Bakassi were an abandoned people who desperately need help from all quotas as they want to be able to stand on their own.
