Roger Federer, French Open has withdrawn from this year’s French Open after failing to recover from a back injury.

The 34-year-old did not play in the Madrid Open earlier this month after hurting his back during practice for the tournament.

Federer returned for the Italian Open but was beaten in the third round by Dominic Thiem.

“I regret to announce that I have made the decision not to play in this year’s French Open,” the 2009 Roland Garros champion wrote on his Facebook page.

It means Roger Federer will miss a grand slam for the first time this century.

Frenchman, Gael Monfils, has also pulled out of the tournament after complaining of having a virus.

The 29-year-old, who was born in Paris, would have been a dark horse at Roland Garros after the most consistent start to a season in his career.
