Governors-Forum-Nigeria-AbujaThe Nigerian Governors’ Forum will meet on May 26 in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, to discuss the disagreements on the proposed Grazing Reserve Bill and the proposition for ranches among other issues.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State hinted reporters about the meeting on Tuesday, when he received a delegation from the Movement Against Herdsmen Occupation of Benue Territories, a pressure group campaigning against open grazing in the state.

Mr Ortom, who commended the timely efforts of the Federal Government in sending troops to curtail the excesses of the armed herdsmen, said it was unfair to insinuate that Benue State had been neglected by both the Federal Government and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum in the wake of the attacks.

The campaigners against open grazing of cattle in Benue State presented a copy of the proposed Grazing Prohibition Bill earlier presented to the state House of Assembly to Governor Ortom.

Mr Dave Ogbole, addressing Mr Ortom on behalf of the group, presented a red face cap and white T-shirt to the Governor, to protest the continued killing of local farmers in Benue State by herdsmen, as they propose a home grown security strategy to the governor.

Governor Ortom, who assured the group of working to bring an end to the killings, said the governors’ forum would meet in Makurdi over the matter.

This is the first time the pressure group, pushing for the re-migration of the herdsmen back to the North from Benue territories, is meeting with the governor and it is believed that results will come in soon, to enable fleeing residents return home.
