Kogi AssemblyThe crisis rocking the Kogi State House of Assembly deepened on Tuesday, as members of the pro-Imam faction sat amidst tight security despite the judgement of a Federal High Court, nullifying the purported impeachment of the Speaker, Momoh Lawal.

The members, who were led into the chamber by the factional Speaker, Umar Imam, were heavily protected by men of the Nigerian Army allegedly drafted from the army records in Lokoja, the capital of the state.

They had come for the plenary to deliberate on some issues affecting the state.

One of the topmost issues in their mind was the issue of the pro-Momoh group.

A member representing Ankpa 1 State Constituency, Ahmed Muhammed,  moved a motion condemning what he called desecration of the House of Assembly.

He urged the House to take punitive measure against the G-15 [the Momoh group] to forestall further occurrence.

Mr Umar in his address to the members described the action of the G-15 that sat last week as unlawful, calling on their respective constituencies to recall them and replace them with better persons.

Meanwhile, members of the G-15 have raised an alarm over alleged assassination attempt on their lives alleging that their quarters were invaded by some gunmen who shot sporadically for over 30 minutes on Monday night.

The members of the group, led by Mr Lawal said they had stayed away from the complex following the intervention of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 8 and the Commissioner of Police in the State who advised both groups not to seat to avert violence. After the advice, both groups adjourned plenary till Tuesday.

But the pro-Imam group stormed the Assembly complex at about 9:00 a.m. local time and were accosted by the policemen drafted to man the gate.

After their deliberations, the pro-Imam faction adjourned till next week Thursday.
