Nigeria CustomsNigerian Customs operatives attached to Kano/Jigawa Area Command have intercepted a truck stashed with contraband worth 20 million Naira, intended for sale in the country.

The Nigerian Customs Service operatives intercepted a truck stashed with contraband from Maigatari Border town in Jigawa outstation.

The seized goods include 680 cartons of Eva soap, 80 bales of secondhand clothes and 20 cartons of Oba Gold macaroni.

All identified as contraband under Nigeria’s Import and Export Regulations.

Addressing reporters shortly after the operation, the Comptroller in Charge of Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Mr. Abutu Mathias said no arrest was made but investigations are going on to identify owners of the product and would later destroy the goods as provided by law.

Mr Mathias disclosed that the operation was successful through the support of Maigatari Police Divisional Headquarters and Army officers attached to operation Salama in Jigawa state.

According to the Comptroller, Maigatari Border town has for many years remained very tough for Customs to operate because of committed and continued resistance by the smugglers, who in many occasions overpowered officers on duty especially when the smugglers travel in group.

Meanwhile, the command said while they continue to enforce Nigeria’s Export and Import laws, they equally await further directives from the Comptroller General of Customs who was vested with the responsibility of deciding what to do with goods such as these.
