The Senate Committee on Navy says it will continue to make a case for better funding for the Nigerian Navy in the face of increasing threats on Nigeria’s waterways.
At a meeting of the committee and principal officers of the Nigerian Navy, chairman of the committee, Senator Isah Hamman-Missau said that the committee was aware of the many challenges confronting the Navy in the discharge of its duty.
He said that they were committed to ensuring that better budgetary provisions are made for the Navy.
Earlier, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas, had complained that although the Navy has recorded major achievements in recent times in the protection of the country’s maritime environment, the challenge of funding, lack of logistics, equipment and inadequate funding continue to hamper its effectiveness.
He advocated that the way forward is to increase the funding for the Nigerian Navy to make it a more viable and effective force in the protection of the nation’s waterways.
