The Canadian government has invested about 80 million Dollars in the fight against Vesico Vaginal Fistula on woman and girls in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.
At a media briefing to announce a new campaign against child marriage in Africa, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Perry Calderwood said his government is using its diplomatic missions across Africa to emphasize the need to actively bring an end to child, early and forced marriage globally.
Ambassador Calderwood disclosed that an estimate of about 15 million girls are forced into child marriage around the world each year adding that several countries in Africa have the highest rates of child marriage globally.
He explained that education remains the instrument through which women and girls can be liberated from the clutches of child marriage and poverty.
He said that the funding is geared towards helping African countries to develop strategies and deliver the sustainable development goal target on child marriage.
