willie obiano, anambra state, improved welfare for workersWorkers in the Anambra State Local Government Service Commission, have been assured of more welfare packages from the government.

The Governor of the State, Mr Willie Obiano, hopes that the package will step up their commitment and productivity in the commission.

He gave the assurance when he visited the commission’s secretariat in Awka, the capital of the State.

Addressing the workers, whom he described as the catalysts for development in rural areas, Governor Obiano promised to commence training and re-orientation programmes.

This is in order to ensure they are conversant with the best practices in terms of service delivery to the grassroots, as well as in promoting the developmental strides of the present administration in the rural localities.

It is the first time a sitting governor in the state is having an interaction with the civil servants in the local government system.

The unprecedented visit of the State Governor, to the headquarters of the Anambra state Local Government Service Commission, Awka, is one that received high commendation from the workers, who seized the opportunity to relay their challenges to the Governor.

In an address of welcome, the chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Dr. Peter Egenti, commended the Governor for assisting in furnishing the new office complex.

He said that the office, which was built by the past administration, had brought relief to the over 70 staff who usually had to cramp themselves into the former makeshift structures.

He further stated that the development had also led to the positive transformation of the character of workers, as issues such as absenteeism, fraudulent manipulation of records and massive revenue scam, among others have been eliminated.

Hence, he appealed for more re-orientation programmes for workers.

While the chair-person of Heads of Local Government Administration, Mrs Chika Nwankwo-Ikelie, appealed for increment in Local government staff salary, as done for their counterparts in the state civil service, the State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Jerry Nnubia, harped on the essence of training for staff.

In response to the appeal, the Governor made it clear to the workers that their welfare was his priority.

He added that his administration would never owe them salaries and allowances but would increase their salaries once the internally generated revenue of the state increases to 2.2 billion Naira.

He, however, urged them to be more productive and loyal as the “government has even concluded arrangements to provide housing facilities to benefit every worker in Anambra state”.
