House of Representatives in Nigeria kick against removal of JegaThe House of Representatives has rejected a call for the re-introduction of toll gates on federal roads to aid maintenance and construction of roads in Nigeria.

Representatives Francis Uduyok, who sponsored of the motion, expressed concern over the poor condition of federal highways.

The lawmakers, who were bothered by Nigeria’s current economic downturn, did not seem convinced about the option of generating money by re-introducing the toll gate system.

Dissatisfied with the proposal, members of the lower chamber opposed the adoption of the prayers when it was put forward.

The Senate had in December last year asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately reverse the toll gate policy by ensuring that every federal road has a toll gate.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration had scrapped toll gates across the country.

However, the Senate‎ adopted the recommendation on the reversal of the toll gate policy contained in the report of the Ad-hoc Committee on Works, which investigated the total collapse of federal roads in Nigeria.
