ASUP Leaders Meet, Declare Indefinite Strike From Wednesday

universityThe Labour Unions in the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) in Okitipupa have commenced an indefinite strike following the alleged failure of the school authorities and the state government to meet their demands.

The unions are the OSUSTECH’s branches of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU).

The decision was taken at the Joint Action Congress of the Unions held at the mini campus of the institution in Okitipupa, Ondo State.

The communique was signed by the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Secretary of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), Mr Temidayo Temola, Mr David Bamigbola and Mr Peter Akindehinde respectively.

In the communique issued at the end of the congress made available to reporters, some demands of the unions included, adequate funding of the university, appointment of substantive Vice Chancellor and curbing of alleged corrupt practices among others.

The unions also demanded the probe of the administration of the Acting VC of the institution.

The communique read: “Having explored all humanly possible means in checking all the excesses of the Acting VC and having exhausted all friendly and reasonable means in making the Acting VC to correct all the anomalies being perpetrated by him and those under his watch.

“He should immediately step aside as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University or vacate the office of the Vice Chancellor until the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor in accordance with relevance of qualifications, competence and experience.

“The Government of Ondo State should place the necessary attention on OSUSTECH and fund it adequately.

“In the spirit of true leadership, academic excellence and integrity of the university, the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa should appoint a Vice Chancellor for the university laying credence to the relevance of the qualifications of the candidate, his competence and experience.

“To this end, the unions vowed not to resume for duty until all their demands are met by the state government and the school authorities”.
