The House of Representatives has called for a one-month extension to the deadline given to candidates to register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The call was made in view of the difficulties being faced by some prospective candidates of the UTME in the process of registration, with the House Committee on Basic Education summoning the JAMB Registrar to appear before it for explanation on some of the issues.

The lawmakers also asked the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to deploy safety equipment at each examination centre, to avoid stampede due to overcrowding.

Some prospective candidates raised concern on difficulty to complete their registration, even as the April 20 deadline for registration exercise draws nearer.

The candidates, while speaking to Channels Television at the Jamb Zonal Office in Benin City, the Edo State Capital, urged the management of the Board to make more facilities and personnel available, in order to ease the stress of registration.
