Buhari Meets With Senate Southeast CaucusDeputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by a cabal in the Presidency to use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC to remove him from office and rubbish his political career.

Senator Ekweremadu made the revelation at plenary on Wednesday when he read a letter which he said was written to him by an anonymous Nigerian who was part of the plot.

Based on the letter, he said the plot was meant to be executed on May 6 and 7 and included a search on a building in Enugu that the EFCC would claim to be his own, having initially planted foreign currencies and other incriminating documents in the building.

The alleged discovery would then be displayed for the media, he said.

The EFCC, however, denied the claims in a statement by its spokesperson, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren.

The statement read in part, “The Commission wishes to state in very strong terms that it is not aware of any plot to set up Ekweremadu for any arrest. If any agency is plotting to plant monies and guns in Ekweremadu’s residence, it is certainly not the EFCC as such antics are alien to the Commission.
“Nevertheless, the Commission is worried by the alarm and the fact that the highly-regarded Deputy President of the Nigerian senate would go public with such unverified information without first double-checking with the Commission.
“This is not only very strange but smacks of a scripted propaganda campaign to distract the Commission by putting it on the defensive.”
