Former DPO,10-year jail term,Police in India’s northern Mathura city said on Friday that they arrested a man the previous day for allegedly attacking his daughter with acid.

The victim, Khushboo, said her father had poured acid on her on April 30 after she and her mother reported him to police for allegedly working in the sex trade industry.

Deputy Superintendent of Mathura Police Awaneesh Kumar said the father said he was upset over the daughter’s marriage and wanted her to leave her husband.

Women are the victims of 80 percent of the roughly 1,500 acid attacks reported globally each year, the London-based charity Acid Survivors Trust International says, with more than 1,000 cases estimated to occur in India alone.

Despite a law making acid violence an offence with a minimum penalty of 10 years in jail, and a Supreme Court ruling on the regulation and sale of dangerous chemicals, acids are still bought and sold without the required licenses.
