After the players packed the balcony at Munich City Hall to serenade their fans with songs and much waving of the Bundesliga trophy, they met at a members-only event in Munich to celebrate into the night.

Among music, dancing and former greats of the club, the players gathered around a hologram of the trophy on stage to say farewell to defender and long-time captain Philipp Lahm and as well as midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his team and said that he intends to go on and win many more titles over the next years with the team.

Bayern beat Freiburg 4-1 in their final match of the season but secured the league win last month when they beat Bayern VfL Wolfsburg, three weeks before the end of the season, to open up an unassailable 10-point lead over second-placed RB Leipzig with three matches remaining.

The Bavarians have now won 27 German championships, having promised to bounce back after their Champions League exit, to Real Madrid, and German Cup semi-final defeat, to Borussia Dortmund, left their potential treble-winning season turning to a one-title affair.

The last match of the season was also a farewell for the 33-year-old defender Philipp Lahm, the man who won won eight Bundesliga titles, six German cups, the Champions League and the World Cup, and for Xabi Alonso.

Lahm, who captained Germany to their 2014 World Cup victory, retires at the end of the season a year before his contract with the German champions expires.

The diminutive defender was one of the world’s best fullbacks for the better part of a decade, before moving into a midfield role more often in recent seasons.
