As part of efforts to industrialise Akwa Ibom State, Governor Udom Emmanuel has flagged off the construction of a coconut refinery to complement the recently established coconut plantation in the state.

Speaking at the event in Mkpat Enin where the refinery is to be constructed, the governor said the project was part of his government’s efforts to diversify the economy and in fulfilment of his campaign promises.

He, however, warned residents of Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi and Eastern Obolo local government areas – the host communities for the coconut project against any act capable of disrupting the success of the project.

He said the government would not tolerate any attempt by people in the communities to foment trouble.

Governor Udom, who said some youths were bent on rubbishing the efforts of his administration to develop the state, called on village heads to encourage youths to shun acts of vandalism and support the government and protect its investments.

The member representing Mkpat Enin in the State House Of Assembly, Otobong Ndem thanked the governor for the project and promised that the people would cooperate with the contractors.

The project is expected to be completed in 18 months.
