Rafael Nadal launched his bid for a 10th French Open trophy on Monday with a huge 6-1 6-4 6-1 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire.

The 30-year-old Spaniard looked in imperious form as he steamed through the first set in less than 30 minutes, after he described the Frenchman as a dangerous opponent prior to their encounter.

Paire played with more freedom in a closer second set as Nadal lost his edge on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Trading baseline rallies, they exchanged breaks to leave the Frenchman leading 4-3.

Nadal then pulled clear and, with Paire periodically clutching his stomach after a medical time out, the heavy favorite for the title took nine of the last 10 games to close out the match in less than two hours.
