The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has restated the commitment of his administration to re-position sports in the state. 

As part of efforts to achieve the goal, the governor said the state government would upgrade the facilities at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to meet international standards. in a bid to attract world-class sporting events to the state.

According to the governor, the presence of standard facilities will help to attract world-class sporting events to the state.

The governor gave the assurance when executive members of the Edo State Council of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE)  led by its chairman, Julius Erharuyi, visited him at the Government House in Benin City.

The governor said the state government will ensure the facilities on the ground get vast improvements to the required standard.

“We will improve on what we have as a state and ensure we revive sports to enhance sports development in the state and country at large,” he said.

He added that every local government area must have a sporting arena. We don’t need to buy a land but can look for a school that have vast land, we can re-designed the pitch

He also disclosed that a Sports Commission will replace the Ministry of Sports as part of recommendations from the recently held sports workshop in the state.

“My administration will set up a sports commission that will create avenue for only those experts in sports to contribute to the development of sports in the state” he concluded.

In his address, the chairman of AUPCTRE, Edo State Council lauded the strides taken so far by the present administration to develop the state particularly in the area of sports.

He called on the Edo State government to make provision for vehicles for the state athletes instead of the present practice of hiring vehicles for competitions.

“The Afuze Game Village and the Etete Indoor Sports Hall which is not in use anymore can be acquired from the National Sports Commission and revived for the purpose of reviving sports in Edo state,” he said.
