Cristiano Ronaldo headed an early winner as Portugal beat hosts Russia 1-0 on Wednesday to go top of Group A and spoil Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev’s 100th cap.
Portugal has four points after they conceded an equaliser in stoppage time to draw their opening match 2-2 against Mexico.
Ronaldo did not join his teammates on the pitch on Thursday as he was among a group of players given a rest after Wednesday’s match.
Portugal will play New Zealand on Saturday, June 24, while Russia will face Mexico in their last group game.
