Portugal Aim First Confederations Cup Trophy

The Portugal national team trained in St Petersburg on Friday preparing to take on New Zealand in their final Confederations Cup group game.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined his teammates after he headed his side’s winner against hosts Russia on Wednesday and put his country top of Group A.

Portugal have four points after they conceded an equaliser in stoppage time to draw their opening match 2-2 against Mexico.

Portugal play New Zealand on Saturday, while Russia face Mexico in their last group game.

Santos

Portugal national team coach Fernando Santos told a news conference in St Petersburg on Friday they are ready and are confident ahead of the match.

“First of all I concentrate on this group, and that was our work over the last two days. We have looked at the New Zealand team. We watched the two games they played here in Russia and it helped us. We looked at how they played. We are going to have a team talk this afternoon, we are going to talk about how we are going to face our opponents,” Santos said.

“We have decided what we want to do and we will continue with our posture, our position, objective game by game, but always trusting that we will win. That’s very important. In all games we go on to the pitch to win, we have that confidence in ourselves.”

Defender Luis Neto said the objective is to finish top of the group.

“Naturally we’d like to finish well in our group, with a victory that would allow us to clinch the first place, so we can face the next game in the best form possible. We want to have a good game and show our commitment in the tournament,” Neto said.
