The Yobe State Government has sent relief items to 307 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who opted to permanently settle in Kukareta Community in the state.

The 307 beneficiaries were given 30,000 Naira each as well as plots of land, assorted building materials, among other items.

Presenting the materials to them, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam represented by his Deputy, Abubakar Aliyu said: “Government will also provide health facilities, water supply and schools among other amenities to help the settlers better.”

Located on the outskirts of Damaturu the state capital, the displaced persons have been in the community since 2014 when Boko Haram heightened their onslaughts on communities in the north east.

According to Aliyu, less than 2000 IDPs are currently taking refuge at the Pompomari official camp in Damaturu the State capital.

“Today’s occasion for the distribution of 307 numbers 50X100 plots and building materials like blocks, zinc, nails, timber, cements among others to the IDP, therefore, marks yet another milestone in our quest to assists and support the IDPs to build houses and settle in their new communities.

“The state government will also provide additional social amenities like health clinics, water supply facilities and schools to augment the existing ones at Kukareta and other returnee communities.

“It is our ardent hope that all the stakeholders will come together and key into this noble, sustainable and simple initiative of catering for the shelter needs of the rural dwellers,” he stated.

Furthermore, he expressed appreciation to the President, the state governor as well as security forces for the return of relative peace which according to him, has significantly reduced the population of the IDPs in the state.

Meanwhile, the village Head of Kukareta Lawan Bulama thanking the Yobe State Government for the resettlement of the displaced persons said: “the IDPs have over the period proven to be of good conduct hence the need to be our brother’s keeper.”

One of the IDPs, Hajiya Hauwa promised to live peacefully with the host community stressing that she decided to live there permanently because the residents are “amazingly receptive”.

“We better settle where we are most accepted because there is no place like where you have means of livelihood within your disposal,” another beneficiary, Makinta Dogoma, stated.
