Missile Threat: Trump Assures Guam Governor Of Safety

President Donald Trump has assured the governor of Guam, Eddie Baza Calvo, of the U.S. government’s full support and that the territory is safe.

Trump told Calvo who posted a video of him speaking with the president on Facebook on Saturday that “I just wanted to pay my respects and we are with you 1000 percent, you are safe”.

Guam is home to a U.S. air base, a Navy installation, a Coast Guard group and roughly 6,000 U.S. military personnel.

KCNA, the North Korean state news agency, had said on Thursday that the North Korean army would complete plans in mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles over Japan to land in the sea 18-25 miles (30-40 km) from Guam.

Guam, the Pacific island that is a U.S. territory, had also posted emergency guidelines on Friday to help residents prepare for any potential nuclear attack after a threat from North Korea to fire missiles in its vicinity.

Reacting to the threat, the President said, “We’re going to do a great job here, don’t worry about a thing. They should have had me eight years ago, somebody with my thought process because that was the time, but, and frankly, you could have said that for the last three presidents but you’re going to be taken care of.”

“Eddie, I have to tell you you’ve become extremely famous all over the world they’re talking about Guam and they’re talking about you. And I think, tourism, I can tell you this, you’re tourism, you’re going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you now.”

In his response, Calvo thanked Trump, saying he had never felt so safe and confident with the assurance he got from the president.

“Mr President, as the Governor of Guam, representing the people of Guam, and as an America citizen, I have never felt safer or so confident with you at the helm.

“So with all the criticism going on over there, from a guy that’s being targeted, we need a president like you. So I’m just so thankful and I’m glad you’re holding the helm, sir,” he said
