The Joint Task Force (JTF) has raided one of the hideouts of suspected Boko Haram, in Kano state, killing one of the sect members and recovered some items believed to be materials for bomb making.

Sporadic gunshots and multiple explosions were heard in the early hours of Tuesday morning in some major areas in the ancient city of Kano.

“Our men just raided one of the hideouts of the elements … where we discovered explosives and weapons,” said the spokesman for the JTF in Kano, Lieutenant Iweha Ikedichi.

The gunshots were reportedly heard around Sheka area as residents woke up to a round of gunfire exchange at the Sharada Police station and Sabo Gwandu parts of the city before the break dawn.

Unconfirmed reports claim that the gun exchange was between security operatives and members of the fundamentalist sect ‘Boko Haram’.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris also confirmed the incident saying it was the JTF, that took the battle to the den of the terrorist following security reports they were hiding in the area and plotting an attack on the Sharada Police Station.

Mr. Idris said one of the terrorists was killed while three women and a child, believed to be family members of the insurgents, were captured alive.

He added that over 4000 live ammunition of AK 47, six drums of explosives, and several knives were recovered from the terrorists during the operation.

The commercial city has recorded a number of attacks from the sect this year with a bomb explosion in Christian worship centres within the Bayero University Kano on Sunday which claimed 20 lives while almost 200 people were killed in an earlier attack in the year.
