Polio: Immunize Your Child Or Go To Jail, Niger State Warns Parents

Apparently worried by the reoccurrence of polio cases in the state, the Niger State government has concluded arrangements to establish mobile courts across the 25 local governments areas in the state to prosecute parents who refused to present their children for immunization.

The Chairman of the state Taskforce on the eradication of polio and Deputy Governor of the state, Ahmed Ibeto who revealed this to Channels Television’s correspondent in Minna, the Niger State capital, said any parent found guilty will be fined N10, 000 or six month imprisonment.

Mr Ibeto further said the state government has commenced a compulsory stop and search of all vehicles at all entry point into the state where children eligible for vaccination will be examined and vaccinated.

He said the police and men of Niger state vigilante groups in all the 25 five local governments area of the state will always accompany the immunisation officers to enforce compliance and forestall harassment.

    Polio have become a nightmare in our society leaving many children dead. This punishment serves as an eye opener to parents who are lackadaisical about their children’s’ health, but still, i hope it will be effective. Parents on the other hand should develop a positive attitude towards health. The government should also try to engage in programmes and activities that will motivate parents especially the non educated to fight against infant mortality. Our children are the leaders of tomorrow.

    This is a good development. I like that the  state government is taking this very seriously. lack of immunization has resulted in the death of many children. With the punishment at hand parents will take the matter of immunization very seriously. In addition to this, the government should also apply behaviour change communication strategies like using forums and seminars to adequately educate the public on the importance of immunization in the lives of their infant children. It is known that children are the leaders of tomorrow so all hands should be on deck so that we do not loose them at an infant age.

    Well, this is quite impressive, it shows that our government is waking up from their slumber. This will make parents to know how important the health of their children is. But one question i keep asking ‘is ‘is the government capable?’. I believe they should educate parents on the prevention of polio and more programmes should be created to reduce child mortality rate.

      Its a good thing that all the women in Niger state are to bring their children for Immunization and with full force,some of this women have made up their minds never to take their children for the immunization but with this laws that has been made, every woman will want to take her child for the immunization.     I think this is very initiative idea, because children are suffering from polio  due to no
    Immunization. I also think the government should adopt the behavior change communication,to help educate and enlighten parents to immunize there children, letting them know what could happen to there children if they don take the action.     This is mostly found in the north as they have an nonchalant attitude towards health. it is good to know that the state government is taking the issue of child vaccination very seriously. Due to the presence of the punishment parents,would be forced to take their children for vaccination. In addition to this, the government should adopt the behavioral change communication strategies that will educate the public on the important of immunization. the HEALTH BELIEF model should be looked into as it helps to stipulate the health related behaviour which depends on their perception of such a critical case like this. In behavioral change communication, persuasion shouldn’t be used but appealing.

    This is the way forward, the fact that the government are working towards ensuring that infants in the community are healthy so they can live a good life. Mothers should also comply to the instructions given by the government. children’s health are important and any negative sign should not be neglected. It is observed that in the north women over there have little or no education, mothers should be educated on how important immunization is and the harmful effect polio has on children. they should be convince to belief that child vaccination is important. A healthy child will have a healthy future and their health needs to be taken seriously because the children are tomorrow’s leaders.

The government should also know that using agent of change can be useful instead of object of change. Organizing people in groups that will help create awareness especially now that it comes with a punishment.This should be done with appeal and not persuasion. This mostly found in the northern part of this country. Changing  the behaviour of an individual comes in different ways because some people can be in the per-contemplation, contemplation,preparation, action and lastly maintenance stage. In doing this there will be different approaches in solving different stages.

    This is  a very innovative idea being that it stands to keep young children alive and give them the benefit of growing healthy,most mothers shy away from this because of the cost but because the government is helping them and i like the fact that they the government is imposing it by saying they have to pay a certain amount. this should continue and should spread to other states.
