The displaced people of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State are asking the Federal Government to resettle them at Dayspring Island as a compensation for the loss of their ancestral home to the Republic of Cameroun.

The Bakassi returnees bared their minds at a people’s centred interactive forum in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, to proffer lasting solutions to their plights which has lingered for over 10 years.

A former senator and indigene of Bakassi, Florence Ita-Giwa, urged the Federal Government “to commence the process of developing Dayspring Island instead of pursuing a nebulous venture of regaining the Bakassi Peninsula lost to Cameroun.

“Let all the money that would be used to pay lawyers and all the other resources be used to settle us. We Bakassi people do not want appeal. We don’t want war with Cameroun. Let all the resources that would be used to try to reclaim Bakassi be used to resettle us in Dayspring Island.”

She added that, “Nigeria loves Bakassi and the President called on the Vice President to set up a committee of stakeholders towards the resettlement of the Bakassi people. We hope the terms and references of the committee would be our prayers so that we would rest.”
