The Director General of The National Agency for Food Drug and Administration Control (NAFDAC), says the fight against illicit drugs is a responsibility of all Nigerians and he is calling on the general public to avail the agency with information as regards this menace.

The D.G. who was represented by the Director, Investigation and Enforcement NAFDAC Madonna Garba was speaking at the south-south regional destruction exercise of illicit products worth over N200 million in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.

Setting the pharmaceutical items ablaze, the D.G. emphasized that the commission is ready more than ever before to restore sanity to the health sector and maintain a zero tolerance to counterfeit drugs in Nigeria.

He says the products being destroyed are substandard and counterfeit medicines, food and other regulated products seized by various establishments in the south-south region.

He says the commission’s efforts are yielding tremendous results because there is a significant drop in the percentage of fake and counterfeit medicines in circulation.

The Director, Pharmaceutical services in Cross River state, Edem Ita-Edem says the exercise is part of activities by the medical sector to cleanse facilities in the hospitals, pharmacies, free from hazardous substances which can be harmful to consumers.
