Goodluck JonathanThe Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday resisted all attempts by his supporters at a People’s Democratic Party, PDP rally in Enugu State, South East Nigeria, to make him declare an intention to contest the 2015 presidential election.

Despite the pressure mounted by prominent members of the party in the zone, President Goodluck Jonathan kept mum on whether or not he would contest the presidential poll, insisting that he would respond to their request “later”.

The President, however, announced to the party supporters who thronged the venue of the rally that the PDP would sweep the governorship polls in the zone come 2015.

The leaders of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the South East geopolitical zone, unanimously urged President Goodluck Jonathan to re-contest for a second term in 2015 assuring him of their total support for the race.

At the unity rally of the PDP South East Zone held at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, various speakers including the Chairman, South East Governors Forum and Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji and other South-East governors called on the President to re-contest the presidential poll in 2015.

They insisted that on no account should he reject their request for his re-election, and that they would not mind conscripting him if he refused to declare his intention to continue in office.

President Jonathan on his part assured Nigerians and the south-easterners in particular that he would never disappoint them even though he said time was not ripe for him to declare whether to run or not.

Other PDP leaders who attended the rally include the Senate President David Mark, PDP Chairman Adamu Muazu, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio.

Some party members who defected from other parties were also formally received into the PDP at the rally.
