Three bomb attacks blamed on a feared radical sect killed one person and wounded 11 others in a volatile north central Nigerian city of Jos, the Plateau state capital. Reports from the Punch stated that three victims, who had been rushed to hospitals with critical injuries, following the Saturday attacks, died soon after.

The bombs went off at about 10 p.m. Saturday in three spots in Jos where people had gathered to view a televised match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, said Plateau state spokesman Pam Ayuba. Authorities suspect a radical Muslim sect locally known as Boko Haram which has launched similar simultaneous attacks in northern Nigeria, he said.

The mode of the attacks mirrored that of the dreaded islamist sect, Boko Haram said Ayuba. Hundreds of people had gathered to watch the first Clasico of the season and were drinking while relishing the tantalizing display of skill by the players on the Bernabeu pitch.

A 35 year old barber lost his life as a result of the blast. The police spokesman further said a yet to be detonated bomb was also found at one of the viewing centers.

Nine, out of the eleven hospitalised, have been discharged from a local hospital according to authorities.

The attacks occurred in heavily militarized areas of a city which sits in Nigeria’s “middle belt,” where dozens of ethnic groups vie for power. The city has been at the epicenter of religious and ethnic violence in the country, straddling the dividing line between Nigeria’s largely Christian south and Muslim north.
