Death Toll for Jos Crisis Rises; 4 People Confirmed Dead
The death toll from the triple bomb blasts in north central city of Jos is said to have risen to four. According to reports, three other persons who has sustained critical injuries from the blast and were receiving treatment in hospitals, died while getting treatment.
The bombs went off at about 10 p.m. Saturday in three spots in Jos where people had gathered to view a televised match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, said Plateau state spokesman Pam Ayuba. Authorities suspect a radical Muslim sect locally known as Boko Haram which has launched similar simultaneous attacks in northern Nigeria, he said.
The mode of the attacks mirrored that of the dreaded islamist sect, Boko Haram said Ayuba. Hundreds of people had gathered to watch the first Clasico of the season and were drinking while relishing the tantalizing display of skill by the players on the Bernabeu pitch.
A 35 year old barber lost his life as a result of the blast. The police spokesman further said a yet to be detonated bomb was also found at one of the viewing centers.
Residents of the neighbourhood have begun evacuating for fear of further attacks.
“The impact on our house is so severe that any little wind could now blow away the roof of the house because all the ceiling boards are shattered and the roofing woods have all cracked,” resident Mrs. Rhoda Dennis said.
She said “we are afraid because we don’t know whether there are more explosives around.
