The Pacific State of Papua New Guinea has been struck with a 7.1 magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake which struck 89 kilometres away from the city of Lae was said to be very, very big and that there were no warnings issued before it struck.

There are no reports of serious damage and the tremor is unlikely to trigger a tsunami as it hit deep underground and inland.

It wrecked major stores inside the city of Lae including Lae’s Foodmart shop and caused some damage to the ceiling as it lasted for two to three minutes, however there were no injuries recorded.

Seismologists say there likely will not be tsunami but landslides could be a problem in the mountainous area.
