Weeping and mournful citizens of the secluded communist state filled public plazas bidding farewell to the controversial “beloved leader” who had ruled North Korea for 17 iron-clad years.
Dressed in black, Jong-un, along with top army and government officials gathered around the 69-year-old late leader who lay in state in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
Kim Jong-il’s body, laid out in a glass topped bier, was surrounded by the red “kimjongila” flowers named after him and placed in the same mausoleum where the embalmed body of his father Kim Il-sung is displayed in a glass sarcophagus, Reuters reported.
Jong-un is expected to step into his father’s shoes. Believed to be in his late 20s, Kim Jong-un who studied briefly at a school in Switzerland will be the youngest person to lead a nuclear power.
Funeral for Kim Jong-il, who died on Saturday, 17 December after “an advanced acute myocardial infarction, complicated with a serious heart shock”, will be held on 28 December.
He will be laid to rest next to his father.
