There are reports that over five people have been injured in a wave of fresh bomb explosions in Kano, northern Nigeria’s largest city.

The blasts reportedly went off at the New Road park at about 1 p.m. this afternoon even as the dust is yet to settle after the coordinated bomb and gun attacks befell the city last Friday, killing at least 185 people.

Stricken with fear, many residents are beginning to flee the ancient city before the tenuous security situation deteriorates any further; some of those travellers saw the attacks.

Eyewitnesses to the attacks said the explosives were packed in three bags and were mistaken for luggage belonging to some passengers.

According to an eyewitness, when nobody claimed the bags, wary travellers became suspicious. A search soon revealed the contents of the bags to be explosives.

One of the bombs reportedly went off before the situation could be defused, injuring five people. Others were able to run for safety.

The windscreen of two luxury buses in the park were damages by the blast. A detachment of the Kano State anti-bomb squad was immediately deployed to defuse the remaining explosives.

So far, security operatives say they have discovered some 100 or more unexploded devices and at least 8 car bombs in different parts of the city, foiling further attacks which would have followed the Friday bomb blasts.
