The Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) is urging the Federal Government to address the critical issues of mismanagement and other lapses in the oil and gas sector which was raised in the recent NEITI report.
The Executive Secretary of NEITI Zainab Ahmed at a news conference in Abuja said the NEITI report for 2006 to 2008 contains data that will enable the government and National Assembly seek answers on issues of extractive sector revenue, governance, transparency and accountability.
She calls for NEITI to be more empowered to dish out steeper sanctions to the challenge of information hoarding from relevant agencies that do not cooperate by giving sufficient information for auditing.
On the petroleum industry bill, Mrs Ahmed advised that the new draft of the PIB should be made to guarantee substantial improvement in the fiscal regimes, sector governance and to meet international best practice.
