The Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliamnce, Emeka Onuoha on Thursday announced the indefinite suspension of former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, his mother and brothers (Nnanna and Mascot) from the party for alleged anti party activities.
Mr Onuoha made this known in Umuahia after the meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) saying that “those suspended were observed to be doing everything within their power to destabilize the party.”
He said that the suspended members were alleged to have brought in thugs into the party’s office with the aim of disrupting the meeting of the top 14 members of the SWC. He added that “those suspended have been inciting some members of the party.”
Announcing that the suspension is indefinite, Mr Onuoha warned the suspended members who have party materials in their possession, to return them within 24 hours after they receive their letters of indefinite suspension. He noted that the suspension of Mr Kalu, his brothers and their mother who was the leader of the party does not mean the end of the party as “no single individual can own a party and their indefinite suspension will serve as a deterrent to others who may want to toe their footsteps.”
He said that those who were suspended were called at several occasion to mend their ways, but to no avail.
The party leader however, refuted the claim that some people including members of the state government approached the party to do what they have done. He noted that they were determined to bring sanity into their party and have no external influence over what they did.
Mr Kalu, a one-time presidential aspirant, until this suspension, was the Board of Trustees’ Chairman of the party while his mother Eunice Kalu is the party leader, and his younger brothers are stakeholders in the party.
Other suspended members include the party’s auditor, financial secretary, public relations officer and the local government chairmen of Aba south, Aba north, Bende, Obingwa and Umunneochi.
