Two police officers have been killed in Minna, the Niger State capital city, by two unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the radical Boko Haram sect.

Eyewitnesses told Channels Television that the two men had arrived on motorbike and, upon sighting the team of security agents at the city gates, had opened fire, resulting in the death of two on-duty officers.

The gunmen had taken the weapons off the body of one of the cops reports say, before fleeing the scene.

The attack, which occurred late last night between 10 and 11 p.m., is the second strike on police officers in Niger, in less than a week. Two other officers of the law had been killed at the popular Mushishi housing estate in Minna days ago.

Niger State police public relations officer, Mr. Richard Oguche confirmed the attack to Channels Television, but declined further comment.

Police authorities assured that they have launched an investigation into the shooting and will bring the culprits to justice.
