The federal government has declared the 2012 as the national mathematics year. This is a part of the government’s transformation agenda which it seeks to achieve through mathematics.

This was made known by the director general of the National Mathematics Centre, Professor Sam Ale while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday.

According Professor Ale, “President Goodluck Jonathan has approved and declared open the 2012 Nigeria national mathematical year.” It is believed that one of the major keys to achieving the Vision 202020 and national transformation is through mathematics.

He further revealed that the official flag-off of the mathematics year will be performed by the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai on the 1st of March.

Prof Ale explained that the move is aimed at “addressing issues of scientific transformation and reawakening the mathematical science community in Nigeria to meet international standards.”

Mathematics, according to Prof. Ale offers vast career opportunities at all levels and ensure the country’s millennium development goals are speedily achieved.
