Concerned about the decline of sports in the country, particularly football, the Senate has announced plans to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement of football in the country.

The Senate at its plenary on Tuesday directed its Committee on Sports to immediately conduct a public hearing to investigate these allegations and the confusion in football administration in the country.

The directive followed a motion sponsored by Senator Adamu Gimba who expressed his concern over the decline of sports particularly football.

Nigeria’s ranking by FIFA has recently plummeted following the dismissal performance of the Super Eagles. The senior national team also missed out of qualifying for the just concluded Africa Nation’s cup.

The Senate in a surprise move set aside debates on politics and other economic issues to beam its searchlight on sports administration in Nigeria.

Former chairman Senate Committee on sports Senator Heineken Lopobiri said that “the mal-administration and corruption in football management are to blame for the sorry state of the game in the country.” He also observed that there is confusion in the administration of the round leather game.

The Senate President, David Mark then drew the attention to the nationwide apprehension over the Super Eagles nation’s cup qualifier against Rwanda which will come up later on Wednesday in Kigali.

The Senate at the end of the deliberation unanimously mandated its committee on sports to hold a public hearing on the decline of sports in the country.
