President Goodluck Jonathan has described the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the only political party in Nigeria following the party’s ability to settle its differences amicably amidst plurality of views.
The President made this known at the 59th National Executive Committee meeting of the party in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja on Wednesday, where he re-emphasized the need for more unity in the party.
Giving a swipe at the opposition parties, the president chided that words of individuals were laws in opposition parties, adding that it was only the PDP that possesses the means of using dialogue to settle disagreements amongst its members.
“For now, the PDP is the only political party we have in Nigeria that does not have one person whose word is law. Most other parties have individuals whose words are the laws. In the PDP, there is no such person whose word is the law,” he said.
The President urged the National Working Committee of the party to ensure that unity continues to reign in the party no matter the kind of misunderstanding that rocks the party, saying “as a political party people will always disagree. There is no party where there wouldn’t be disagreement.”
Referring to the crises that rocked the party ahead of the primaries for the 2011 presidential election, the president noted that “the ability to disagree and our ability agree and take a common position” makes the PDP the only party in Nigeria.
“Despite the disagreement, finally we will always agree on a common cost.” “Our ability to agree and our ability to take a common position, our ability to allow people to make input is our strong point” he affirmed.
The PDP has been the ruling power in Nigeria since the advent of democracy in 1999.
The National Executive Committee meeting which was a valedictory session for the current executive members of the party also had in attendance the Vice president Architect Namadi Sambo and some (PDP) governors in attendance.
The President also congratulated the governors that were voted back into office and those that have won their cases at the Supreme Court and election tribunals.
He called on the governors to work hard at ensuring that unity continues to reign in the party across the states.
