The Ogun state police command has ruled out any foul play in the death of the high Egba chief, the late Oluwole Olumide and commenced an investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to his death.

A statement by the commissioner of Police Mr. Okoye Ikemefuna, on Sunday confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had “commenced investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death.”

The late Apagun Pote of Egbaland was an associate of former governor of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel, and he allegedly committed suicide by drowning himself in an artificial lake located at the now controversial Golf resort at about 10 PM, late Friday night in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

The Commissioner noted that no mark of violence was observed on his body after it was recovered from the lake.

The Police boss confirmed that the deceased went to the lakeside of the resort with his driver at about 7.30pm and later sent him (his driver) on an errand to his house located at Ita-Eko, Surulere area of the state.

“Available information has it that the deceased went to the lakeside of the resort behind the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, with his driver at about 19.30hrs. He later sent his driver back on errand to his house at Ita- Eko, Surulere area of Abeokuta. When the driver came back, the Chief could not be located but his shoes and cap where found by the lakeside” the statement from the police headquarters read.

The statement further adds that “a search party was immediately drafted to the scene. The search continued till about 01:00 hours of 17 March, 2012 without success.” “However, at about 6:00 hours, the search resumed and the body of the deceased was recovered at about 9:00 hours. The body was viewed and no mark of violence was observed.”
