Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and eight other unions of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, have called for the immediate removal of the Vice chancellor Professor Wale Aare-Olaitan and the institutions registrar and the bursar.

The workers, who on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest within the institution’s campus in Ago Iwoye, accused the school’s leadership of “high handedness coupled with allegations of unpaid salaries and arrears running into several millions of Naira.”

The protest had several barricades set-up across the campus with one along the Vice-chancellor’s office and the administrative block.

The agitated union members called for the removal of the Vice-chancellor and the registrar over issues bothering on their welfare

While reeling out the challenges facing the institution which were allegedly perpetrated by the Vice-chancellor, the chairman of ASUU, Dr Adesola Nasir asked the state government to “as a matter of urgency release the government white paper of the visitation panel to the institution while a new governing council should be constituted to give a new lease of live to the state owned institution.”

Responding to the development, the state Commissioner for Education, Mr Segun Odubela, urged the union members to be “calm while a solution to the problem is being sought.”

Although effort to get the reaction of the Vice chancellor on the ongoing strike by the union was unsuccessful, as the state government through the Commissioner for Education, said the issue was being addressed in the best interest of all stakeholders in the institution.

It will be recalled that in the last three years, peace seem to have lost its calm in the tertiary institution, since the reforms ordered by the institution’s management led to the sack of many academic and non-academic staff of the institution.
