Police orders patrol to return on federal highways

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar has ordered the immediate commencement of ‘intensified motorized patrol’ of federal highways in the country to ensure the safety of road users.

This directive to police chiefs and commissioners is coming on the heels of the removal of road blocks and police check points on federal and state roads, nationwide.

According to the IGP “stories of road blocks, harrassment of citizens on highway and other gory tales, earlier associated with the police, no longer confronts us.”

The police boss stated that road blocks have disappeared and he noted that “they will not return to Nigerian roads. He promised to keep the roads safe without the return of the road blocks.

He said the police will beef up their patrol presence to ensure that armed robbers do not take over the highways and terrorize Nigerians.

He therefore ordered all Commissioners to commence robust motorized patrols of federal high ways  within their areas of jurisdiction to ensure the safety and easy passage of road-users.

Mr Abubakar added that the patrol will be complemented by a rapid response structure that will be operating both day and night as, he assured Nigerian road users of their safety on the roads.

This order is coming after the gang-rape of 42 secondary school students, who were initially robbed along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, last weekend.
