The metering committee set up by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has advised that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to fast-track the provision of meters  before embarking on any other reform in the power sector.

The chairman of the committee, Mr Bamidele  Aturu at a news conference in Abuja, described the nation’s huge metering gap as an emergency that should be addressed without further delay.

Mr Aturu stated that most of the states visited by the committee revealed that there were issues of insufficient power supply, bad transformers, and low quality of electricity supply as well as sharp practices by staff of the PHCN.

While stating that the committees report will be out in two weeks, he debunked reports that the committee will come up with a new electricity tariff for the country.

The chairman of the NERC had last week annonuced that a new tariff system will commence in June of this year.
